Step by Step Instructions

Establish the type of wall you want to drill into. If it is hard like brickwork or blockwork then you are best to use a corded drill. If it’s drywall, then you can use a cordless drill.

Once the type of wall is known, choose the type of drill bit to use. A masonry bit is suitable for brick or block walls where you would use a corded drill. The other type of drill bit is one that’s suitable for metal and wood. This is the one you would use for drilling a hole in drywall.

Next, choose the diameter of bit needed, depending on the size of the hole required for the diameter of the fixing you are using.

Insert the drill bit into the chuck and then screw the chuck tight.

Hold the drill and pull the trigger to rotate the bit. Try it a few times to get used to the motion.

Mark the position on the wall of the hole you want to drill.

Place the drill bit on the wall keeping it horizontal.

Press the trigger lightly to start the drill and then steadily increase the pressure to increase the speed. Once the hole is made, withdraw the bit from the hole.

A note of caution: Always check to make sure there are no pipes or electrical cables in the wall where you want to drill. The last thing you want is an electric shock or a burst pipe!

There you have it, there’s not that much to it, it’s really very simple.

Now you know what to do, it’s a case of purchasing a drill and suitable bits and just getting on with it.

It’s great to be able to do projects around the house by yourself and not always have to rely on a tradesman to carry out the simplest tasks for you.
